Australia''s Tallest Eucalypts: Alpine and Mountain Ash

Alpine Ash timber flooringAustralia is a rich source of quality timber for various applications. Timber can be used for floorings, furniture and as construction material. The Alpine and Mountain Ash  can be found in Victoria and Tasmania region. These particular tree species extends as far as southern New South Wales, which is a sub-alpine region, and the ACT. The Alpine and Mountain Ash belong to the Eucalyptus family with scientific names, Eucalyptus delegatensis and Eucalyptus Regnans respectively. These trees are Australia’s tallest eucalypts with the Mountain Ash as the tallest in the entire world.

What is called Tasmanian Oak is usually these eucalypts mixed with other species like the Messmate. It is called ‘oak’ because it closely resembles one. Both eucalypts and oak share the same roughness in the lower portion of its trunk and a smooth off white bark on the upper portion, which can be greenish grey in some trees especially the Mountain Ash. In some parts of Tasmania, particularly in the south, the Alpine Ash has its entire trunk covered with a rough bark.

When it comes to appearance, which is one of the attractions of timber, the Alpine Ash heartwood can be a pale pink or a yellow brown. Its sapwood is usually of a similar color and thus, hard to distinguish. The Mountain Ash in both its heartwood and sapwood has a pale brown shade. Fortunately, these trees are quite speedy growers as can be seen in its very clear growth rings. This is perhaps its chief attribute when it comes to its application in the housing industry. It can be easily replenished to appease the demand of the eco-groups. It can also readily supply the growing demand for timber. Its grain is usually straight with some traces of waviness and the common gum veins.

For use in timber flooring or decking, timber is classified according to its properties. The heartwood itself has only a low durability at Class 4. This will limit its use to indoor or protected areas only. The sapwood is usually resistant to lyctid borer infestation, which is another great feature. Both Alpine and Mountain Ash can be manipulated easily and are very versatile for many kinds of applications. It can be used as general framing, for floors and panels, joinery and furniture pieces. Mountain Ash has a great workability for it could bend easily as well as glue sufficiently. It may not be as durable as other species but can also be used outdoors as long as the area is suitably sheltered.
