New England Blackbutt: Your Ideal Flooring Product

new england blackbutt timberAnother popular timber flooring product is the New England Blackbutt, which is distinguished from the Coastal blackbutt because it grows in the tablelands of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. In its natural habitat, it can be occasionally found in pure stands, however it is usually found amidst other tableland species like the Messmate, Manna Gum, Brown Barrel and other Stringybarks with the Blackbutt having the highest number.

In appearance, it resembles closely the Coastal Blackbutt with its cream color, ranging from pale browns to straw blondes. It is only called blackbutt because the lower portion of its trunk dramatically darkens after a bushfire incident. It should not be mistaken as Blackwood, which is charaeristically a dark colored timber.

Both Coastal and New England Blackbutt species have gum veins, a common and prominent feaure. The latter species commonly has more gum veins and wears a slight hue of pink. Its grain is very straight and even, an attribute that makes it highly appealing as flooring because it adds width to any room.

The New England Blackbutt is not as durable as its coastal counterpart. Its sapwood is actually vulnerable to lyctid infestation. Despite the product’s limited applications, it still has various applications like flooring, as structural members and joinery. Nonetheless, it is known as a hardwearing floor as compared with the Baltic Pine, which is common in traditional homes in Sydney. Moreover, the Blackbutt is said to stain nicely. Since it has a light color and even grains, its inherent attributes permits the stain to evenly seep into the surface.

The New England Blackbutt is also very popular as sports flooring, which is the kind used in gyms, dance studios and even multi purpose halls. Because of the high traffic in such places, it uses an eight millimeter wear above the tongue to allow it to be frequently sanded as compared to traditional floors. In this way, it will last longer before getting it altogether replaced.
